Rathmines, on the western shore of Lake Macquarie, was once home to the largest RAAF Flying Boat Base in the Southern Hemisphere.
Housing a variety of seaplanes, notably the Catalina but also models like the Walrus (pictured), Rathmines was a strategic base from 1939 to 1960. The base was at its busiest during World War II and planes from Rathmines were used in operations across Australia, Papua New Guiena and the Philippines.
